OUR STORY
In The Works is a grassroots organization created to help youth who have experienced struggles with poverty, mental illness, or addiction reconnect with their community and find employment. Our goal is to provide a 16 week employment initiative program where youth will learn essential employable, technical, and interpersonal skills in a therapeutic environment alongside their peers.
The idea for In the Works took root during the summer of 2019 when a small group of mothers took notice of the rising trend of youth struggling with mental illness, addiction, and poverty- including their own. They searched for support within the community, but it was scarce, and what support did exist was often stretched thin with long waitlists. Frustrated by the lack of assistance available and backed by the motivation resulting from watching their children struggle, they sought to create their own. Their inspiration came from a social enterprise based in Stratford PEI called The Reach Foundation- a program that provides long-term support for youth while they re-integrate with the community through employment or continued education over 16 weeks.
Following in their footsteps, In the Works has been designed to centralize existing community services while providing a thoughtfully structured workplace where participant employees can safely learn, develop and practice necessary skills for their future personal and professional endeavours.
